Small Business Book Review
September 09, 2005

Six Disciplines for Excellence: Building Small Businesses That Learn, Lead and Last" by Gary Harpst, co-founder and former CEO of Solomon Software.

From 1980 to 2000, Harpst grew Solomon to $60 million in sales before it merged with a company that was later acquired by Microsoft.

Harpst's new book "Six Disciplines for Excellence" unveils a systematic and practical methodology that small businesses can adopt:

  • To help their employees execute more consistently toward their company’s strategy
  • To stay aligned with the organization's goals
  • To continually improve business processes -- with the goal of achieving lasting excellence.

But the book is just the tip of the Six Disciplines "iceberg." Where most business improvement authors drop the ball is writing a decent book -- and stopping there -- leaving it up to its readers to implement the ideas and hope for the best. That's where Six Disciplines is different.

Behind the book is Six Disciplines Corporation, supported by more than $10 million dollars of funding and 50 man-years of R&D, developing practical Internet-based technologies that make the Six Disciplines Methodology practical.

Small Business Trends recently interviewed Gary, and Anita Campbell came away with this reaction:

“Six Disciplines is unlike anything I've seen for small businesses. It's a book. It's a methodology. It's technology. It's a coaching system. It's something you'll be hearing a lot more about.”

In addition, Six Disciplines Leadership Center franchises are being established nationwide to help coach the best small businesses to keep on track, and achieve excellence that lasts.
