Default WordPress & Apache On Your PC

I've discovered an Apache webserver that runs on Windows XP. In fact there's a special 'lite' edition that's plenty good enough to run wordpress.

If, like me, you are new to databases and hosting your own blog, this is an excellent way to try out WordPress on your own PC. As the server is all yours (!) it runs very quickly, and any goofs don't appear on your website.

I suspect it could also be used for testing phpBB or similar. I tried WordPress, and it only took a few minutes to install both the Apache server and WordPress.

Here's an excellent WordPress with Xampp (Apache) tutorial.

But then you run the risk of having your computer opened to the world. This can be danerous at times. If you do not know how to properly secure your machine, you machine could be used for other purposes.

To test out Wordpress you can always create a free one on their site. I prefer to use something like Blogdesk sitting on my PC, do the writing in there and then publish to the Apache server. In the early days I tested out posts to the free blog sites and they still worked quite well with Blog Desk.

Corey, I neglected to mention, the plan was to do everything offline. I tested the the server and wordpress and this was a brilliant speedy way to learn WordPress. You can ftp (or sftp!) when you are ready, and even download a blog to repair it - offline!
One thing that really impressed me about WordPress was the ability to import a blogger blog (all the posts and comments) if you want to change your provider. I can see MS co-operating with such a facility - almost

Thanks TI, I did try this a while back, but it was very slow. Presumably because there are now so many subscribers.
