After the EMD udpate the keyword in the domain name is not that much important. Only the structure of the site, the quality of content, and user experience matter with the number of in-bound links pointing to your site are important factors to consider.

It seems to me that the name of the domain name should be appropriate, but it is possible without the use of key words

I don't think it matters today. Probably before it matters but now I doubt that it can have an effect to rank well in search engines.

I think keyword in domain is still helpful but we know there is also an EMD update already but if you build quality website with high quality content then still it is helpful to have keyword in domain.

Earlier this technique used to help to increase the website ranking, but now Google seems it like a kind of Black Hat technique so it's important to avoid having domain based on keyword.

There was once a time when search engines were much more trusting of websites. Don’t get me wrong, search algorithms were still incredibly complex, but they used different logic to determine what a relevant site was for a given search.

No I don't believe it is necessary to have keywords as your domain name. If your content and metatags are written well enough and if you build the websites authority search engines will know what your website is about.

But it is important to create well structured urls for internal pages. For example, an ecommerce site might have a page about Nike men's sportswear so then url might be domainname.com/mens/sportswear/nike - so then important keywords do appear in url.
