Blog Commenting is always helpful whether it is a do follow link or no follow. It helps to get traffic to your website if you are doing at relevant blogs as per your services or products.

You have to be careful with your neighbourhoods now though, don't overdo it with the commenting, if you are deemed as being spammy, you will do more harm than good!

Yeah, I would say still make blog commenting as part of your SEO work, but maybe don't worry so much about do follow or no follow.

it's hard to make long comments, yet after an hour of doing the work you'll end up waiting for your comment to be published - worst case is moderators will simply ignore them even if they are not spam.

If you really have something valuable to say on the basis of the content of the blog, only then the blog comment is worth it. There is no point in spamming, you won't get any good results through it.

Sure, it's the same as a forum. Don't just post something just to post. Make sure that you can add to the conversation.

I am reading also that making the anchor keywords quite distinct and not from your own target list of keywords is helpful.

In terms of hummingbird - using synonyms and alternate wrong spellings as well as words that would be associated with your neighbourhood.

like "highly-regarded" "award-winning" "first-class" "quality" and the like put your target keywords in a desirable nieghbourhood of positive words.

I don't know if anyone will read this, but I have quite a lot to share about blog commenting, as it is still a major method for optimization. However, there are some pretty strict rules you have to follow closely. Also, they require quite a lot of time and effort. Here is how I do blog commenting, in short:

I use mainly moderated blogs. You are able to "sneak" a link, if your comment adds value to the post. An opinion on a topic you are competent about. Another view, even a correction to the author. Moderated blogs are easy to notice - it is posted regularly there.

The quality of the links is determined by the following factors:

1. Relevance of the sources in which links are made: area relevancy, topic similarity, business blogs;

2. Contributing to the website's (author's) mission of providing valuable and infromative content by:
- expressing a related opinion based on reading the whole material and having a view on the topic;
- providing another point of view;
- sharing important information with the readers of the post.

3. Avoiding link farms (link and article directories)

4. Link neighbourhood on the website, and on the page you post on. How many links are there in the content of the page?

Result: comments with links approved in relevant, high PR sources, with answers by the authors (they even thank me for commenting), etc.

I perfectly understand why the rules of the game have changed with the blog commenting - it was all too easy to post a nonsense comment and get a quality backlink. I don't think we should give up on commenting and reading the blogs in our niche. It's just that we shouldn't expect immediate results.
