The 301 redirection removes the existence of URL. e.g if you redirect example.com/abc example.xyz. every time user write for abc url will be redirected to xyz url. When to use 301

1. The URL of the page has been changed
2. To transfer all links to the new page.

Canonical Tag does not redirect from abc url to xyz. It keeps both URLs alive and it is just used to tell Google that both of these URL represent similar content and google will start ranking only one URL instead of two.

Canonical tag is used when there are duplicate urls in your website. It helps to save from the google penalty and it transfers juice to the particular url. 301 is hard redirection means that page is permanently move to new location and it preserves your search engine rankings for that particular page.

Default URL Redirect

When you use 301 redirect, you show to Search Engine that current page is permanently moved to another location.

Cannonical is used to prevent penalties by Search Engine for duplicate content. When you use it, the current page exists but shows to Search Engine that is "copy" of another "master page" . From the following example you will get a clear idea about this.

The above 3 url are same and exact content. Normaly Search Engines doesn't like the duplicate content and give penalties too. So in this case you should put in every single page a rel canonical tag to the "master" page. For example we will chose "http://example.com/category-1/subcategory-1/demo-1.html".

<link rel="canonical"

301 Redirect (Permanent Redirect) - 301 redirects one webpage to another and Canonical tag prevent duplicate content issue and help minimises crawling errors.
