Depends who and where your customers are.

The way I see it now:
Facebook mainly for sharing photo with family and friends
Google+ for tech people
Twitter for tech people
LinkedIN businesses and professionals

If you can keep people highly engaged with your facebook page it will regularly show up on their wall. Great for eyeballs and traffic.

You can build personal relationships on all, just remember to give before you get. I still think search is where to focus for most businesses.

Have seen some really great work from young entrepreneurs on facebook though, promoting there businesses to their friends which then gets shared with their friends etc.

I think that facebook or twitter is the best social media site because teenagers or people within the age group of 18-22 use it. I think this age group is what got facebook and twitter started. People this age pay attention to celebrities, unlike those who are older who are less likely too. I think that celebrities using twitter is one reason it is successful.

You might find the statistics interesting

Only 13% of twitter users are between 18-25 and 29% of facebook users. Also this is a year old and the number of older users should be growing much more rapidly. Much more than 50% of both services is people over 25.

Twitter just made an announcement yesterday that they've reached 100 million active users where that dated from a year ago states 106 million users.

Very interesting infograph that you posted. I wonder who the 12% and 13% of the population that have never heard of facebook and twitter are?
Anyway, thanks for sharing the stats.

Yes the key thing about twitters announcement is the word "active". How they define that I don't know. The thing to realise about twitter is that most accounts on there are bots not real people.

The infographic stats are probably fairly off on a number of things though, for example % of people aware of Twitter could not be within 1% of facebook, maybe that is in the USA only or something.

The effectiveness of the social media sites still depend of how you will use and optimize it.
