Default Search Results- Different Based On Location, Or Type Of Computer?

My computer is a desktop, and my wife has a lap top. When I search in google, I get a map that shows local businesses. For example, when I search for "payroll services" I get a map that shows businesses in the area that perform that task.

When my wife searches for the same thing, she does not get the map, and the search results are somewhat different than mine.

Does anyone know why this is? My thoughts are because she has a lap top and I have a desktop, but we are getting our web hookup from the same source...which is what is throwing me...

Hello Again, Could it be that one of you is logged into a Google account and the other not? If so Google customizes search results based on your history. In fact, even if you are both logged in, Google could be showing different results just because of the different history.

If both of you are not logged in, I don't know. I just know one time when I was doing some optimization for a site I noticed that the site was number 2 in Google extremely ahead of my schedule. I started think no it can't be there so soon. So I pulled out my phone and search with it, sure enough the website was on page 4. It turned out that on my desktop I have customized search turned on and being that I was working on the site so much it saw my history and ranked it higher. I jumped into settings and turned customized search off and sure enough my website was right where I thought it would be, on page 4.

As TFerg said, you could be seeing some kind of personalized search, even if you're not logged in.

It's also possible Google is testing. They are constantly trying different things - if it works like their website optimizer, they'll drop a cookie on your computer to make sure you see the same version of the website for a given time period, but a different computer on the same connection might see a different version.

Google has been doing IP based geotracking for a few months now. If your wife is tethering her phone for her internet connection, or using a plug in 3g/4g card, it's possible google can't place where she's searching from.

Since Bing geared it's searches for local results, Google has been doing the same thing. It's a pain for doing keyword research, but it's great for getting good search results.

Every time you visit a website through a search Google thinks that website must be important to you, so places it up the results for next time. When my business started appearing to me at number one for an amazing search I thought all my Christmases had come at once. When I wasn't receiving the traffic, I knew something was terribly wrong! then I noticed '18 Visits' beside the title, I knew that must have something to do with it.

If you both clear your cookies and cache, and log out of any Google accounts, this should clear any personalised search results.
