I'd recommend you to ask your friends or partners who have used services of some SEO companies. Listen to their opinion and, of course, to the results.

Reference from colleagues is the best thing you can get

Also don't trust people promising #1 in google in .... weeks
or companies offering fixed price for all clients

We know every site deserves different treatment

Good luck on your search

NEVER sign on with an SEO company that talks about and promotes the notion of PR (Google page rank). Professional SEO companies know that PR is not a valuable metric system. The only thing PR pitching is really used for is Link selling & thats just so that a link seller has something to try & make the sale look better. At the end of the day, PR won't effect your bottom line.

I've seen PR1 sites make 10x more than PR8 sites. Forget about PR completely & focus more on your ROI (Return on investment).

In addition, you also don't want to sign on with any company that guarantee's a position for any length of time. SEO changes all the time as new values are added to search engine algorithms and it's impossible to follow through with such a bold guarantee. Not to mention that every day a site is on the internet, another person decides to launch a site to compete with you. It's a constant battle trying to stay at the top & just like in the Olympics, the one who won last time might not be the winner next time.

In addition, it's important that you understand that Link Building is NOT SEO either. Link building is an SEM (Search engine marketing) campaign. So if an seo form promotes link building as SEO, that's another sign that they don't know what they are talking about.

Hope that helps, Good luck to you

Interesting point of view and I respect that,

For me, SEM is a broader term than SEO and link building IS one of many techniques in SEO that you can use to get your sites noticeable by search engines

Perhaps the following articles can give better explanation than I can

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) is what link building does, it markets your website to the search engines. SEO (Search engine Optimization) is the optimizing of your meta, content, ON PAGE navigation links, deep indexing site map, Keyword density, title, description, etc...

ANY article you post that says link building is part of SEO has no clue what the differences between SEO & SEM truly is. As SEM is a broad term, it contains many sub categories, SEO is Only one category within SEM as well as link building is, but both are separate categories.

For every link you post saying Link building is SEO I can find a link saying that link building is part of SEM.

http://www.raisemyrank.com/articles/seo-sem.htm
http://www.reprisemedia.com/searchvi...ths-synergies/
http://www.strategic-ranking.com/seovssem.htm

As you can see by the descriptions of SEO vs SEM above, SEM is the umbrella term & SEO is but 1 component in a list of many different components. Link Building however is a totally separate component within the SEM umbrella and Not categorized within SEO.

It's all the small time web masters & bloggers that have confused the 2 terms and post on their blogs what THEY think link building should be that has aided in confusing the masses of noobies to the search engine industry.

Hope that helps

Really?

I'm not starting a flame here but Wow, I must have confused seomoz and seobook as other reputable SEO sources

And yet they made one major mistake in explaining SEO and SEM

And I must be crazy thinking that link building campaign I've done have brought me to first page of search engines

Wow I thought link building is some kind of optimization for search engine

While we're debating and dragging ourselves away from the original topic, it's all coming down to one point -> MAKING MONEY

Even some of your own source links point out that SEO is a single category within SEM & also lists link building & buying as a separate category in SEM. You just have to read what they say & not only what you want to hear.

@ Original thread Poster

Back on topic.... There are Black hat & there white hat type seo companies. White hat companies are the kind you want to invest into, they do all the proper ONPAGE search engine optimization the right way so that you don't risk being omitted from search engines for violating their policies. This type of seoer will have your site optimized in a way that it attracts Organic traffic & people that add a link to their own site naturally without having to spam any blogs, forums, directories, classifieds, etc.. in a attempt to run an SEM link building campaign.

Black hat is what you want to avoid, this type of seoer will use tactics that search engines ban sites for from the index such as, but not limited to: deceptive redirecting doorway pages, keyword spam, text made to look invisible using the same color as the backgrounds, Mass link building spam all at the same time (This is more of a penalty & we have noticed that 1000 links in a few hours can get your site dropped from the engines for a few days)., Buying links (That's right, purchasing keyword links for the purpose of manipulating the serps is against google policy), etc...

At any rate, The above should help you stay away from the wrong ways & stick to the right ways. And keep in mind, just because black hat gets faster results & some people you know may not have been caught yet, it's still the wrong way to do it & can ruin a businesses reputation for the long run. So do it the right way the first time & stick with white hat techniques.

Hope that helps

A reputable SEO company will be more than happy to provide references and proven results.

Try to ask them for testimonials from webistes they have worked with in the past. Also, A good indicator that they can deliver is that if they are ranking high in the SERPs for their own keywords in Google.
