Default Google Bowling

Authored by: Michael Pedone

Full Text: http://www.searchengineguide.com/ped.../1024_mp1.html

A Snippet:

A small loophole on Google has turned into a devastating black hole, sucking in and wiping out countless quality websites in the process. And it just may be their competitors sending them into the abyss.

I've yet to see any conclusive evidence that Google is penalizing sites that purchase site wide links. Unless Google can determine who exactly purchased the links then doing such would be "evil".

That's not to say that people are not getting penalized for these practices, but I've yet to see evidence of Google Bowling actually work.

I also have not seen evidence that this is happening. Has anyone done any testing in which only this one variable was changed?

It seems that this would be a very risky tactic for me to use against my competitors. If it didn't work, then I've just spent a lot of money buying links that boosted my competitors in Google's SERPs. I think the results are better if I focus on working on improving my own sites instead of attempting to attack a competitor.

Even if it does work, you've just spent money buying your competitor a ton of links that may not only send some traffic, but might also boost their ranking in Yahoo! and MSN...

If it is true then that could be what's happened to me. Since Sept 22nd I have gone from getting hundreds of visitors a day from google to almost no traffic at all. I have also noticed that over the past couple of months I have been receiving lots of link-throughs from a website (hbnsos.com) which is some kind of advertising scheme that I've never heard of let alone joined - so someone else must have done it to try and hurt me...possibly for the reasons discussed here. If that is the reason and the purpose it certainly worked because it's crippled my business almost overnight.

I suggest sending an email to Google relaying your concerns. Let them know what happened and what you discovered. You might actually get some feedback. Maybe.

But... Is Google penalizing sites?

It has been stated several times by Google that there is no way that a webmaster can do harm to a competitors site.

It sounds so logical that I believe it.

Previously Google was not telling appart purchased or sitewide links from the natural ones.

Now, I guess, with this update, Google can tell the difference and just ignores the unnatural links.

So, sites with unnatural incoming links are not suddenly being penalized, simply they rank only by the value of their natural incoming links only and they lost the value of the rest of the incoming links.

Does this I'm saying sounds crazy?

Enrique

Here is from Google's Fact & Fiction page:

Quote:
Fiction: A competitor can ruin a site's ranking somehow or have another site removed from Google's index.
Fact: There's almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed from our index. Your rank and your inclusion are dependent on factors under your control as a webmaster, including content choices and site design.
Notice the word almost. Scary.
