Hi Katie, I think one of the most important aspects of keyword research when it comes to SEO (or Adwords PPC, for that matter!) is to pick relevant keyword phrases which are not too broad and that you have a chance of optimizing for.

What I mean is, if you are a pizza restaurant - don't try to optimize for 'pizza restaurant' - you will be competing against all of the pizza chains in the world! Instead, optimize for 'Pizza restaurant townname' or 'Pizza restaurant zipcode' etc. You will have far less competition for these types of keywords and you stand a chance of ranking well.
