I recently set up a bulletin board and indexing is very poor by one search engine (guess who! begins with G) forum/search.php is barred for robots for fairly good reasons, but the recent post url on each sub-forum and latest topic url on the main page would really help. I set it up once, and it's vanished again!

If anyone knows how to do this for phpBB please help. I've been through every page of admin control panel many times, enabled "php and includes allowed in templates" but there has to be something else; maybe permissions on a directory?

From what I understand about pbpBB this is a forum structuring issue. You have to place the main forum into a category. This causes the sub forum to become a 'third level' and the index link option will then be available.

To get around the issue you can:

1. Change the parent to a category.
2. Edit sub forums (via settings) to display on the index page.
3. Change parent back to a Forum.
4. Reset parent forum permissions.

The index page should then show the parent forum as normal, and under the parent description the sub forum links.

thanks Kim, After 2 days slog I decided I'd really have to learn php; guess what - the image that is supposed to appear as the link is missing from the installation (php3.0.4). Sheesh, the time i waste. I'm sure a bit of php knowledge will prove very useful in other ways ...

I never really "learned" php, just edited enough php files that I know in general what a section of code is doing. There are so many free php scripts available that once you get comfortable editing them there really isn't much need for creating files from scratch - at least in my experience.
