I agree,

I am the owner of a niche forum: Online Literature Reading & Writing Forums and although I am afraid of a spammers I use stringent control implementation (a-kismet etc.) as well as live moderation. It takes a bit of time, but in return you get a nice portion of users that actually contribute with great content, appart of placing a links.
