Even thou Google ignores the "description" metatag it's better to have it and to contain the main keywords. The reason for that is if you web page is found it's better having a good description and make the visitor click on your link. Also I saw that Google highlights keywords that it finds in the description so even if it's not helping you in ranking it does help you make a good impression.

I've seen this too. The meta description is used sometimes in the description of the search results. Otherwise it will just show the random first text on the page which could be links or other info not useful to the searcher for choosing your site over another.
