Please can anyone advise me if backlinks from different language (Spanish sites to English) carry the same wieght? I am creating a local one way linking campaign for a number of sites here in Spain (free) predominantly english lang sites (index) but some are firstly in Spanish. Any ideas?

Pagerank is based on the link not text/language. So if you consider two different scenarios both with basically the same links going to them, but in different languages their pagerank would be the same.

Other factors such as link text (language/words) also play a role in search engine rankings.

Wouldn't the anchor text carries some weight?

Depends on what you mean by "weight."

If you're talking strictly Google PageRank, that's based only on the number of links and the "value" of each of those links based on the PageRank of the pages where the links reside. It's strictly a numbers game, and anchor text doesn't enter into it.

But if you're talking about overall effect on rankings, yes, definitely the anchor text comes into play. The language and other geolocation cues of the linking pages will help give the search engines clues as to what country the target page is associated with. And the anchor text tells them what the target page is about.

So yes, the anchor text does carry "weight," but it doesn't have anything to do with Google PageRank.

Does that help?
