Unprofessional People
Hi everyone
I have recently paid a web developer to modify my two websites, he told me he could finish the job in one day. He has not finished his job in fact only one of my websites has been changed and not completely. I call him and he does not pick up, i send him e -mails and he does not return them. He carries himself off as a professional but the times I have been in contact with him I here children yelling in the background. He has not returned my calls or emails he has failed to do what he said he was going to do. Has anyone here ever experienced unprofessional people like this?? What have you done about it and what do you suggest I do.

As much as you want to trust people...it can be hard
Sergman,
Not everyone knows how to interact with others in the real world or business. I have dealt with situations like this numerous times as client, and I have also had clients do me wrong also. He may say he is a professional, but obviously not everyone can be. I simply move on, not wanting to waste time on someone like that. Of course inform associates and those in the business world you are envolved with and look out for their best interest. Then when you have taken care of all that, find a new graphic designer that is professional, you may already have. For every shady individual in the market there are so many more who want to help and sometimes those people could be in front of you. Best of luck and keep your head up...

Sorry that your experience has been so poor Sergman! Hopefully your web designer has not ripped you off and has simply under estimated the amount of time it would take to redesign the sites. If he does finish the product, I hope it was worth your grief!
BTW - I have been a web designer for 12 years and stay busy all the time. I have never advertised, because word of mouth brings in all the business I can handle. The only way you get referrals from others is by doing a good job. I work from home and, especially during the summer, I can have kids running in and out of the house most of the day. I still do a quality job, meet deadlines, and never finish a project until my clients are completely satisfied. I wouldn't use the level of house noise as a measure of someones professionalism or ability.
Hope things work out for you!

Well, the sound of children screaming (or whatever) in the background doesn't generally put a client at ease I have 2 very small children and unless I'm speaking with someone I know VERY well whom I KNOW doesn't mind--and this is like maybe 1 or 2 select colleagues of mine--I just don't talk on the phone until I know my chilluns will be out of site and out of mind for the duration. It's a challenge but that's the way it has to be for me.
Sergman, have you paid any money thus far to the designer? If you are uncomfortable with the services being offered it's certainly your right to question things and if necessary cancel the contract (if you can). I generally give people the benefit of the doubt ... once.
PS: KimiWeb, your work is gorgeous btw

Well I finally got in contact with him again. I actually had to call him on my sister’s phone for him to pick up, he sounded surprised. He was deliberately not picking up my calls! So anyway I got him to (Almost) finish one of my websites that night. As soon as the service I paid for is complete I’m done with this person I’m going to takes Michael’s advice and find another web developer. I’ll keep Kim in mind she has a really nice website and portfolio. Karri unfortunately I did pay him upfront

Karri - We moved to Colorado Springs from Florida about 2 years ago. In Florida the house is kept closed most of the time because you hide in the air. Here it has been a big challenge to find quiet because there is no air conditioning & you have to keep the windows and front door open most of the summer. I surely relate to finding perfect moments to return calls - or rapidly taking off up the stairs I agree, though, that the noise needs to be kept in check as much as possible. I was just trying to feed Sergman some hope that maybe all wasn't lost.
Sergman, I am really pulling for you. Thanks for the kind words you guys!

screaming children
I have conflicting views on this. I work from home from time to time and try to make sure when answering the phone at home it sounds as professional as possible. However, I have had one time where, when I was speaking to a client, the mailman put mail through the slot and my dog went ballistic! I am sure my client heard this dog barking in the background and thought I was the worst attorney ever (well not the worst since I was calling him back but wondering where the heck I was). I think you have to look at how many times it happens and ask would this happen to you (or someone you knew) that many times.
Unfortunately, working with unprofessional people is part of the territory of working. I cannot tell you how many times I have dealt with “professionals” who will not return phone calls, swear during a conversation, or are just plain rude. The best advice I have, and the advice I follow, is always treat someone like you would like to be treated and it will help you develop a reputation in your field/geographical area/network as someone who people actually want to deal with.

I have my fair share of experience working with unprofessional freelancer.
There's one web designer I worked with, who gave me a very nice web design layout during his first milestone. I was happy with his work and paid himthe deposit. However, the subsequent milestones he started to delay his delivery, and eventually went missing! I was unable to contact him through email, phone or sms. And I couldn't use an incomplete design on my site so eventually I needed to redo the whole site (his work was in flash and he never gave me the source files)!

It sounds like you did not have a fun experience. I was not on either end of the conversations, so I'm not speaking into this specific situation.
But, as a service provider of sorts, I have had experiences with customers that made me want to fire THEM as clients. Knowing this I try to be as courteous to people who serve me and make them want to give good service.
Unfortunately, not everyone realizes what damage they do to their business when they give bad service.
Best of luck for the future on your sites!
