Default Trick To Getting Into DMOZ?

I have submitted my business information to DMOZ twice -- about 10 months apart -- but I am still not listed. Does anyone know what the key is to getting on that directory?

Laura

Hi Laura,

there is no trick really, and did you know you can have 2, maybe 3 lisitings in DMOZ, so now you can ignored 3 times as much

Seriously, you can have a generic listing, a local listing, and a shopping listing (I didn't realise about the shopping listing until recently as I thought it was part of the generic listing).

Anyhow, there is no trick other than the following.

1. try for a local listing first, there is more chance you will get listed.
2. Make sure you read and understand the submission guidelines, in your case the title should be 'Chesapeake Bay Gift Baskets inc' no more than that.

The description should be what is on your site, not what you do. eg. we deliver gift baskets to the whole of the US subject to Alcohol state laws'... is not going to get you in.

The main reasons for a submission to get stacked (as in not reviewed immediately) are :~

1. Wrong category. This is jointly the biggest one.
2. bad title - this is the other joint reason.
3. bad description

Laura, don't waste your time worrying about DMOZ. They have some serious operational issues. I suggest you read Dean Phillips outstanding article, "The ODP Sucks!" That should answer a lot of your questions.

Old Welsh Guy is right; there really is no trick to it. I would submit to the most appropriate category and leave it at that; move on to looking for other authoritative site listings such as a directory listing at Yahoo!, BOTW.org, or Business.com.

Sad but true, I've been waiting a while now. Anyone know why it takes so long?

It's free and the editors are not paid.

On another note, I am not sure if this is an option or not, but make sure you check out all of the sites that are currently listed in the category where you want to be listed. There may be a site (or more than one site) that is already listed that you can purchase or there might be a site whose domain name you can buy that is already listed in the category where you want to be listed. If you buy the site or the domain name and redirect it to your site with a 301 Permanent Redirect then you will essentially be listed in that category. All of the traffic and the "link credit" will be passed on to your site if you use a 301 redirect.
