They're helpful to you as a webmaster because you can re-publish articles from those sites on your own website if you feel the article would be helpful to your site's users and if you leave the author's name and links intact when you re-publish it.

As someone who is trying to "optimize" a website and build links to your own site, it's helpful to write articles and get them published on the article websites as those articles will eventually make it onto other websites...and hopefully count as backlinks to your own website.
