I started a thread in a forum on Jesse Helms the day he died. I used quotes about him from three websites.

Then as the discussion started I put his name into a google search without quotes looking for more info,
the thread was listed as #1 for over 24hrs. I was shocked.
My question is how did this happen? I didn't use any SEO or link building.

If you view this thread give your opinion.

new news tends to make a quick impact in rankings. Unless some additional links are built to that then it's likely to fall with time.

If the forum itself is highly ranked, I assume that helped also...

How could we use the news or forum threads to increase SERP to drive traffic to our site?

I figured out why some forum threads rank so fast. Some Forums have scripts that automatically submit to digg, stumbleupon and the other sites like that. The social site and the quick crawl rate makes for high rankings. Its brief but it still works for forums.

yes, social boomarking sites helps also with ranking.

Few sites that are active 24/7 with new content posted every second like forums (phpbb.com, yahoo answres etc) will be INDEXED fast in search results.

But like St0n3y said, it tends to dissapear fast unless it is seen by google as important with backlinks etc. and get RANKED.
