An "impression" is an general advertising term that refers to someone "seeing" your ad. Therefore the "number of impressions" refers to the number of times people see your ad. For example, a billboard on the side of a highway will have X number of impressions based on the traffic stats of that particular highway.
In the case of PPC, impressions refer to the number of times searchers see your ad within the sponsored ads area of the search results. If your impressions are really low, this normally means that your max bids are too low for your chosen keywords and people aren't seeing your ads.

"Impressions" give you a good idea as to how many unique visitors your site gets.

But how many of the drivers blinked while looking at the side of the road? Not that i am opposed to the analogy, but what i mean is are we really getting that amount of impressions (looked-at)? I see lots of EBay impressions but i don't know if they really amount to hits, from seeing the impressions upthere!! It is possible that somebody could associate their hits with impressions because there is some similarities in numbers. I gess that happens for most PPC users. Right?

Thank you viper one for pointing out a flaw in my analogy...Let me rephrase. A billboard, not unlike a PPC ad, is there sitting on the side of the highway. Whether you look at it or not while driving by, it's still important for advertisers to know how many people may "potentially" see their ad. This is where "impressions" come into play. If I'm a PPC advertiser, knowing how many impressions I'm getting is an indicator of whether I'm bidding properly.
That being said, advertisers also know that only a small percentage of those impressions (people, drivers, surfers) will actually see the ad, and an even smaller percentage will take action.
I hope that makes more sense...

Not a problem at all, and i hope that you didn't take me wrong -- i usually am not to good with online forums and my meanings get a bit assertive. I tried putting a lot of impressions upthere under Googles nose but they have gotten better of modifying my campain's fees and actions. (no money -- no go) I guess big EBay might say what they want whether it's in context with the searcher's request. But, i would like to say this: I first learned about Rich Jerk and his website through an impression and I remembered that later on....like I saw this somewhere before!!!!!!! So, in a way, its like branding in the brain for me......and that's not too bad.
Also, it is amazing how little the online word is from a users point of view! We can only recall maybe a dozen flees among the giants, when searching through PPC results.

I personally think that there is just a thin line between offline and online advertising. As for the case of impressions, its effect on the audience for one is subliminal in both. Being ephemeral to its viewers is another.

PPC for me is one of a great way to earn money, although some stays for a meantime but others are still doing great. It will not make you rich but it helps.
