Hello VOGUE:

If you want "real" traffic, you're going to have to make an investment of either time, money or both. I choose to invest time, because of the long term benefits. In fact, I can't remember the last time I actually had to spend money to generate traffic - though there's nothing wrong with doing that.

Most of my traffic comes from organic SEO, as a result of the hundreds of articles I've written. Dozens of websites have picked up my articles and published them, so I also get a lot of exposure that way as well. I also receive a significant amount of traffic from my forum postings. Those two methods work extremely well for me, but I invest a lot of time into doing those things, because of the ROI.

If you choose to invest money in advertising , I recommend pay-per-click and/or ezine advertising, combined with some method of offline advertising. Press releases aren't a bad idea either.

Most of all, it takes time and patience. It won't happen overnight.

1. Make sure your site is well-designed with clean code and as few tables as possible (in other words, make it primarily CSS).

2. Put lots of good, original content in it.

3. Make sure all of your pages use title tags and descriptive description tags.

4. Obtain as many links from related, high-quality sites as you can.

That's not necessarily true. You can get instant gratification from pay-per-click advertising.

True!

(And you can also end up wasting a fortune on PPC if you aren't careful picking your target phrases and/or you don't have a good, well-converting landing page for your PPC visitors to hit.)

For that matter, coming up with a good piece of linkbait that hits the front page of Digg or that gets Slashdotted can bring you enough traffic in a matter of hours to bring your server to its knees.

If all you want is more traffic, it's a case of "be careful what you wish for -- you just might get it."

The real thing to aim for (IMO) is better traffic... (and a site that does a better job of converting the traffic you do get).
