Default Should You Contact Someone If You Link To Their Blog?

I just started my blog...hence I don't really expect anyone to rush out and link to it just yet. But I am wondering, if include someone's blog or site in my blogroll should I contact them and let them know? I know there's technology out there that tells them, just wondering if there's any advantage to letting them know personally?

There really is no need. If you're linking to a post they wrote on their blog, chances are they'll know immediately, or close to it. If the link is in your blogroll, they'll probably find out within a day or two when they check the referrals in their website stats. And yes, everybody checks their stats...

I agree there isn't a need, but it can be a good opportunity for more networking if you are just getting started. Doesn't hurt to start up some conversation.

Ditto what Logan says.

Even though the "www" allows people to hide behind it's vasteness, we still appreciate and lean towards a "connection" made with someone online as opposed to nothingness.

I appreciate the responses. I think it is a good networking opportunity as well. I just don't want to come off as begging for attention/links. I'm in this for the long haul, so to speak, so I'd rather build trust & a good network of contacts over time.

I totally agree on the networking thing. I also think it's just polite to reach out and say HI!

That being said, I link to some sites on my blog which I have not contacted - mainly it is people who are "above me" and who probably have thousands of people linking to them already.

But now that I say it, maybe it is time to reach out across the wires and just say hi.

Yes it certainly couldn't hurt to say 'Hey! I added you to my blogroll."(or linked in a post, etc) Anyone can appreciate that.
