yes, but you've have to pay to transfer. May registrars have discounts for people transferring to their service.

Most domain registrars will have a transfer area on their site.

GoDaddy does a good job. Remembering your account login details can be a pain since it is not based on your email address. Other then this little annoyance, it is a great service.

I use 123cheapdomains.com, I do have some with godaddy but 123cheapdomains.com have the opinion of free nameservers enabling you to move about where ever you want at anytime without having to rely on hosts with doggy nameservers.

Also they will do the whole transfer for you and they give you a year free when you transfer a domain into your 123cheapdomains.com account.

A really great service.

I admit I am a little slow to the party, but a friend recently pointed me towards godaddy.com - I have a couple of non-profits I help with their site, I was able to transfer to godaddy cheaper than the renewal fees would have been through the original registar. It really was an easy process, just make sure you have about 5 days lead time. Plus if you have any time left on your contract they give you that plus a year... in my case $8.95.

One other good thing about GoDaddy is that there are money off coupons out there. Just do a search for "GoDaddy coupons", and you can get a few dollars off your registration / renewal fees.

Godaddy is good also if you are only using them for registrar services. Its easy to use only for domain registration, and then use other services as you choose. Seems by default of the low registration prices that is a common scenario I end up with.

I'm sorry to disagree, but there is no charge to transfer a domain name from one registrar to another. If your registrar charges you anything for the transfer, they are in violation of their Registrar Agreement with ICANN, and should lose their accreditation.

Note that this is different from transferring a domain to a registrar with whom you have not previously obtained an account. Many registrars charge you for opening an account or for re-registering the domain, but the transfer itself is free.

You will need to wait for 60 days after you first register a domain to be able to transfer it, and you cannot transfer it within 60 days of the end of your registration period. Registrars cannot hold your domain transfer up in any way, and must fully cooperate with the registrar to whom the domain is being transferred to effect the transfer within 5 days of it being requested.

The complete ICANN Transfer Policy can be found here.

thank you stupidscript for the valuable info. I found GoDaddy to be good too, especially their Baby package.
