Default New Stand Up Paddle Board Biz Seeking Marketing Ideas

Hey everyone, We are a new Stand Up Paddle Board biz looking for some marketing ideas. Jimmy Fords Boards is a mico biz located in a small tourist area in Wis. The year round occupants numbers around 7000, but swells to about 15000 during the summer months.

We have partnered with a resort that is under new management. The resort has camping, cabins, a bar with restaurant. They also operate a wedding chapel with a banquet hall. We are located on two bodies of water that are connected by a channel. The water is "slow no wake" which is perfect for our operation, as we offer rentals, lessons, and ECO tours of the lakes.

Now for my questions: We reviewed our numbers from this year (our first year) we have found that our customers are 25 to 44 years old and are over 90% women, with an education. Our return on print ad's was terrible. Most of our customers were coming from a 60 mile radius. Google searches and Craigslist was our best avenue for customers to find us. Our Facebook page also was of help. We found that SUP Yoga is our bread and butter.

Any marketing ideas for our Mico Biz?

Thanks,
Jimmy Ford

Well, clearly you want to continue with the things that you already know are working.

You might also reach out to your partners and others in complimentary (not competing) business and see if they'd be willing to share with you what marketing channels are working well for them. If they're in any places where you currently are not, you might consider advertising in those places, too.

If you have (or can get) some good video of people having fun using your product, that could be good, both for demonstrating how easy/fun it is and for attracting more attention to your product. A YouTube channel is free and could gain you a lot of attention, especially if one of your videos captures the popular imagination. (Pro tip: be sure to get signed model releases from anybody who appears in your photos or videos, customers and employees alike. Can save you a lot of legal headaches on down the road.)

Since most of your customers are women, you might consider starting a channel on Pinterest to further promote those photos and videos.

If you're not already set up with Google Local, you definitely want to do that.

You might also consider AdWords. You can geotarget your local area so you're not advertising nationwide if you don't want to.

You might also check with your area/state tourism boards, visitor centers and your local Chamber of Commerce. It's possible they might have ideas to help promote your business, or might even be willing to help promote it, as it could be a "draw" to help bring additional tourism dollars to the area. They would likely at least allow you to put a brochure or flyer out at their offices for visitors to take.

Similarly, you could try to place brochures in other areas around town where tourists (and "staycationing" locals) might find them. Local B&Bs and hotels (and sometimes restaurants and diners) often have racks of brochures highlighting local attractions.

The idea is just to make sure your information is visible and easily accessible to people who might be looking for some fun activities in your area. These are just a few ideas to get you started. I'm sure once you start thinking about it, you'll come up with a lot more.

Hi Jimmy,

I had a quick look at your site and FB page.

I have a couple of hopefully constructive comments.

I suggest you look again at your keywords on the site. They are too broad IMO.

Adwords have been suggested in the post above which is fine although you do need to know what you are doing as they can burn money if you are not careful. Have you considered FB ads?

As you know your demographic you can make highly targeted ads that will be cheap to run.

Hope that helps.
Ed
