SEO Tips For New Website Owners/Webmasters
I’m not an expert in SEO, because an expert is usually more than 50 miles from home and carrying a brief case. However, I have been doing SEO work for 7 years with a good measure of success for myself and my friends.
A Note About Trusting Experts: Do not take full trust in everything you read. Just because someone is an expert does not mean that they are always right. Double check any information before you apply it to your situation.
I want to share some of what I’ve learned, for the benefit of anyone who is new to this game. Having a sparkling new website that nobody can find is like having a beautiful sign inside your lawn shed. It has little value if no one can see it. There are some basic things that you have to do to have your website be seen by potential clients.
You first must decide how you want to promote your new website. There are several avenues to take:
• Organic Search – optimize your site to rank as high as possible with your competitors.
• Pay-per-Click – buy pay-per-click advertising in such things as Google Adwords.
• Email Campaigns
• Article Marketing
• ……..and more
Most new website owners will opt for marketing by organic search in the search engines. It’s an inexpensive method, you can do most of the work yourself and you will be in control of your destiny. If you’ve chosen organic search, here’s a basic list of the things you need to consider:
On-page Ranking Factors
1. Keywords in URL
2. Keywords in domain name
3. Keywords in H1 to H6 meta tags
4. Navigation – internal links
5. Navigation – outgoing links
6. Quality and amount of content
7. Age of your website
Off-page Ranking Factors
1. Number of incoming links
2. Quality of incoming links
3. Rate of acquiring incoming links
4. Anchor text for incoming links
(There are positive and negative considerations for each of the factors above…..far too many to write about here.)
It’s a good idea to read as much as possible about each of the SEO factors before beginning. You may also consider getting help from a specialist. Google changes the rank factors (200+ of them) frequently and unpredictably, so good SEO can require the assistance of someone who stays current with the latest search engine happenings.
There are no guarantees in SEO. Good SEO takes time and the results can be very unpredictable. Beware of SEO experts who guarantee results, too often it is hype to get your money.
