Cross-linking is where two sites link to each other. Depending upon the intent, usage and frequency of the practice, it can be a good thing or a bad thing.

If links are placed between two, relevant sites where each owner is highlighting the content of the other, and if doing so results in an improved visitor experience, there really is nothing wrong with it. Provided each site is quality and not involved in some bad neighborhood.

However, if the practice is used repeatedly and if the intent is to improve rankings, this is considered manipulation, a spammy practice and dangerous to your site.

It's always best to keep it real. Don't use a technique to manipulate the engines and make sure what you do improves the visitor experience. If your motives or actions don't fit that bill, it's best to skip it.

Hope that helps!

What Matt Cutts said about Cross-Linking?

If you have multiple sites you want to link together you need to have a very good reason to be linking them together, otherwise it will come across as being spammy. Why do you have 20 domain names that you feel should be all cross-linked?

Cutts said about the only situation where this kind of solution is viable is if you’re linking multiple country site for the same company together. But even then, he suggested that you do it in a way that won’t come across as spamming. This means instead of having 30 footer links to all the different locations, find a smarter way to do this.

If you have 20 domain names and they’re all versions of the domain in different countries, such as Google.co.za, Google.fr, it can make a lot of sense to be able to get from one version of the domain to a different version. But even then I probably wouldn’t link all the domains all in the footer all by themselves because that’s a little bit strange.

I agree with what everyone is saying here. Cross linking can be done for good reasons. However, using it for the purpose of getting more link juice will mostly warrant a penalty from Google if detected by crawlers. Getting links from only a consistent source will arouse suspicion from search engines

A link from a site's page to another of it's page is not cross linking IMHO. cross linking comes into picture when you have 2 or more sites and you link many pages from your sites to one another. Understanding Excessive cross linking is difficult. In general if you have a new site then avoid linking structures which try to manipulate PR. One way to avoid excessive cross linking is to think it from user point of view. is it beneficial for the user?
An example of excessive cross linking :-

You have 5 sites with 5 pages each. You give a link to each and every page of the 5 sites from each of the site's page. (i.e. you have 25 links on each of the pages) This is just an example to give you an idea of the issue at stake.

And no it's not a dumb question , many of the senior fellows still have different ideas about this issue.

Can you say that doing cross linking could bring more risks than opportunity to you or is it the other way around as long as you don't intend on spamming?
