Default Publish Articles In Newspapers

I have a question to those of us who published articles or columns in newspapers or magazines. What process did you follow to do that?

Depends on what kind of newspaper or magazine it is.

Larger newspapers are mostly going to have their own staff to write articles. If you're lucky, you might be able to write an op-ed piece for some topic. Your best bet with them would be to get to know the appropriate editors and reporters and position yourself with them as an "industry expert" so they might call on you for quotes in topical stories.

Smaller, local newspapers tend to be less formal. In my small town, you could just drop by the newspaper office and have a chat with the editor in chief to see if he'd be interested in a story or a column. Chances are, he will be, as he's always on the lookout for more content for his paper.

Magazines, usually you will need to contact their editor and "pitch" your story idea. Some may allow you to send in the whole article, but generally they want you to send a proposal first, then send the article once they accept your idea. Be prepared to have your article edited before publication. They're most likely not going to simply take what you send and run with it.

You should check each magazine's submission guidelines and follow whatever they say. They'll spell out exactly what they're looking for in the "pitch", what kinds of content they accept, whether you need to be an experienced writer with clips or if they welcome new writers, etc.

HTH!

You can also check out the Writer's Market book and the other media guides to find out about magazines and newspapers, who their audiences are, what are their requirements and contact details.

Figure out the audience you want to communicate with and which publications are meeting their needs and what are their requirements.

You'll probably need to build up with examples of work so maybe starting with free article sites online and the smaller publications such as trade journals or smaller magazines so editors can see your style and quality of writing.

Cheers

Default The Press

I recently got done doing a charity campaign for a boy named Roberto in Indiana, and we got in two local papers. It was nice because we knew someone who knew a writer, and for the other local paper we just walked right in and they interviewed us on the spot and the article was in the paper the next day.

It definitely helped that it was charity, but I imagine local papers are always looking for good community news worth writing about.

What you could try first is to contact writers from newspapers and magazines in your targeted market. Offered your expertise in helping them in writing an article. After you have done this a few times, it will make it easier to get published. Besides, you will get exposure from being mentioned in the article.
