Another clever tactic is create really valuable pages and content for Web 2.0 properties such as HubPages, Google Knol, Gather, Squidoo, etc. You can then have backlinks to your business website. These sites are established, have high PR, and get lots of traffic. If you have a really good page you'll no doubt attract visitors and get them to your website.

Actually it frowns upon the same anchor text. Its a sign of unatural linking

I have never heard of Gather, Knol or Hubpages. I will have to check those out. I have done several squidoo pages.

SimonR,
Can you explain how to turn off the NoFollow on Wordpress. I have a blog on wordpress and it is not giving me any backlinks. Could this be why?

Well one thing you can do is create a series of blogs to promote your website. You can also try doing social bookmarking and social networking. For me Facebook and Twitter really helped!

Indeed, advertising, constant improving of the content will soon bring the results, the only thing, try to be persistant, hard working and move to your aim with "head high".Good luck to you!

There has been a lot of talk about creating quality content on your blog and then people will link to it. While this is true, you need to create quality content that your market wants to read. I would suggest you visit forums, places like Yahoo! Answers, and industry magazines where readers write letters to the editor. It's in this way you'll be able to create content your market wants more information about.

The next thing you want to do is proper keyword research. Find out the common questions typed into Google regarding your market/subject/topic and create blog posts with those exact phrases as the title.

If you want to cut your learning curve down in half, I highly suggest to take a read of this guide on promoting blogs. It will walk you through setting up a blog, monetizing it, and creating the content your market wants to read. I follow this guide along with a few other tricks I picked up in order to promote blogs for myself and clients.
