SEO Scams: Submit Your Website To Thousands Of Search Engines!
One of the biggest and longest-running SEO scams out there is the paid search engine submission scam, where unscrupulous companies try to trick you into believing that you need to submit your website's URL to the search engines in order to get indexed. You've seen the ads:
Submit Your Website to Thousands of Search Engines Only $29.95!
Nothing could be further from the truth.
First of all, there aren't thousands of search engines out there. There are really only five top tier search engines worth submitting to that will actually send you any traffic.
And you don't need to pay anyone to submit your site to them because those search engines will eventually find your site on their own.
However, if you want to submit your site's URL to those search engines, you can do it yourself. The five search engines are:
1. Google
2. Yahoo
3. MSN Live
4. AOL (Powered by Google)
5. Ask (Powered by Teoma)
By the way, your website will get indexed a lot quicker, if you link to sites that are already indexed by the search engines.

Almost right. Should be:
By the way, your website will get indexed a lot quicker, if you get links from sites that are already indexed by the search engines.
Linking to them doesn't get you indexed any faster.

If u have google toolbar installed, your site should be indexed 24h after u launched the live version. Just test some of your sites (subpages as well) and u'll see the bot on the next day.
If you want to check which sites are already indexed type the following sting into the google search form [site: www.mydomain.com] and all indexed pages should be displayed
cheers,

Yes I have seen these kinds of ads numerous time. You are absolutely right because submitting website to thousands of search engines will not help you to get good traffic because a large number of people use only five or six popular search engines.

David has excellent advice in his post. Until the search engine's index your site, you're invisible.
If you want to attract free targeted traffic to your website, there are only two things you need to do.
1. Build quality content that people will want to read. Base each content page on a single main keyword that has a solid demand and, if possible, little competition. Invest in a good keyword research tool like Wordtracker or Keyword Discovery. If you're on a budget, you can use the free Google keyword tool, but the paid services will give you better supply/demand info.
2. Build links. Building quality content will automatically generate links, but everyone should be proactive in helping the process along. One of my favorite ways to generate links is to submit quality articles to article directories. Be careful in selecting the article directories. Pick high PageRank directories and avoid article software that submits to hundreds and hundreds of low quality article sites. That will do more harm than good. The article directories I recommend are:
Ezine Articles
Article Alley
Article Base
Article Dashboard
Go Articles
Happy content and link building!

For those that can't easily get any links, I'd recommend submitting your site to a few free directories so that google can spider your site. Vile Silencer has a list of free directories.
Also, make sure to use relevant anchor text when getting links to your site. Any keywords you want to rank for should be in your anchor text.
