Question Thoughts On Marketing Through FB, Google+?

What are your thoughts and/or experiences with marketing a small business through social sites like Facebook, google+, or linked in?

What complaints do you have about them (if any), or what would you like to see changed?

Thanks!

New customers rarely purchase through social media.
I have found the platforms to be most useful for customer service or promotional methods. (or entertainment purposes)

I think I agree with that. Social media marketing seems to be at best at promoting stuff online. But again, it's not be ignored in online marketing.

Default Social Media = SEO boost

Using social media will help build brand recognition and increase chatter about your company. But you need to be able to do it well and consistently. Also, you need to be able to use the best social media tools that work best for your industry.

Creating the chatter and links back to your site from the social media websites will help greatly with your SEO.

Main point though, you can't just jump in there and hope for results. You need a plan and you have to be able to execute properly.

Cool It Takes Time and Effort

Jumping into the social media, spending some 10 minutes on it, posting a couple of cat pics and the link to the main page to attract new customers sounds too good to be true. And it actually is.
I don't intend to say here that social media profiles are useless or unnecessary. On the contrary, small business owners can't afford ignoring this channel. We just shouldn't expect too much from it. Fb and G+ contribute to the company's reputation, help establish contact with returned clients, they can be good to retain and entertain them. But attracting new custonmers through social media is close to impossible.

You have to address Social Media. That being said there is a lot of conversation on Google+ and how it relates to search.

I think, Google+ is truly effective for search engine optimization. I noticed especially when searching people and places, results from G+ appears most of time on first page. You can search for more tips and advices online.

For B2B, social media isn't necessarily about creating leads, personally I never use it to do so.

It is about building your online presence, leaving your message in places where it matters, and giving a voice and sometimes a face to your business. Linkedin can be a powerful tool for building connections and authority posts...

B2C however, social media can be very powerful. If you have good distributors, or small margins. It can be very useful to have your products plastered over Facebook & Twitter because of the 'like' ability, and sharing. Also ensuring you have an added flare to your voice.

It can vary greatly too, if you are offering a service or a physical product - your pitch will vary. A lot of trial and error and experimentation comes into play when using social media for various businesses.

Actually, many businesses nowadays are engaging on social media sites to promote services and build online presence. On Facebook, Twitter & Google+ you need to come up with useful content to posts and also photos & videos. I noticed, interesting photos posted can be more engaging to other users.

These platforms are really good when it comes to spreading the word on the internet. Not sure about the acquisition part of it but for advertisement, it comes in real handy.
