Default Have You Read A Newspaper Lately?

You know, the physical paper that once was on almost everyone's doorstep.
For me, it had been a while, a long while.

I stopped at a gas station a few months ago, on a Monday. I decided to go inside and pay first because of the credit card skimmers and network security breaches several major retailers were experiencing. As I walked in the door, the newspaper rack caught my attention. I continued to the counter and waited in line. Standing there, thoughts of my high school government teacher surfaced. He made us read the paper and would give tests to ensure we read the entire paper. I remember a time when all the Sunday papers were gone by Monday so I bought one and walked outside. I was thinking "What information would be in this paper that I couldn't get on the Internet?". About that time, a section fell out. I picked it up and noticed something strange, a smell...perfume! That answered my question real quick. I thought it was funny, strange but funny.

The next day I got an e-mail. My high school government teacher had passed away on the previous Friday. This was starting to creep me out now. I was worried the paper had been thrown away and now I wanted to see if an obituary was in there for my teacher. Nope, nothing. I ending up reading the whole paper (Dear Abby included) just for the sake of respect.

I found an interesting article about NoMo phobia. People get anxious when they don't have their mobile devices because they're so dependent on them. Some people check their phone over 300 times a day. Anyway, another article was about a challenge to go without your mobile device for a week. I thought about it for a second and realized something. If I had bought the paper on Sunday and taken the challenge, I wouldn't have known about my teacher until after the funeral.

Has anything like this happened to you?
Have you taken any challenges you regret?
Have you read a newspaper lately?

Dan

Yes, regularly. I live in a small town with a high level of tourism. The newspaper is popular here - and the only source for local news. It is distributed free around town in boxes. Although I go to their website frequently, I often grab a copy of the paper as I get info there from the ads, plus local events and news specific to the area I'm in. Also makes for good use when starting fires in my fireplace aftewards. lol.

I think nowadays, internet is a more popular way of knowing fresh information than a newspaper.
But what a better way to start a day than with your morning paper where you look forward to reading about so many interesting things? I love it.

Newspapers will never die.

I mean, if we had no newspapers, what would we use to stuff inside our boots to soak up the moisture when they got thoroughly wet?

What would you lay on the floor when you are doing some painting?

What would you use to catch a spider in the bathtub so you can deposit him outside?

What would you use to prevent streaks when cleaning a mirror or the windows?

What would the tramp use to wrap around himself to keep warm in the winter?

What would you use to wrap glassware when packing to move to a new home?

When the refrigerator or washing machine leaks or the sink overflows, what would you use to soak up the water?

When you are watering your indoor plants, what would you put under the pots?

What would you put on the bottom of a birdcage?

My Goodness! What a mess the world would be in if we didn't have newspapers!

Sadly, nowadays, I look at the Sunday newspaper only to see if there are coupons that I can use. Usually, I don't have the time to read through the paper which I used to do at breakfast. I still have a subscription though, but the paper just ends up in recycling at the end of the day still looking as it was delivered.

We subscribe to our small town newspaper. I quickly scan each issue.

Just today I read and saved an article on preventing dog bites to small children.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), I downloaded an app developed for a major broadsheet. It has its pros and cons though. One thing, I just can't feel how it is to read the paper like I used too..Looking at a gadget has entirely a different feel.

I don't know if this is good or bad, but I haven't read an actual newspaper for a year already. I check the news online and on tv

I preferred to read news online.
