If you are looking to use images, you should look for images that under the Creative Commons. Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. There are different conditions with CC so be sure to check what you are allowed to use freely, and which ones have some restrictions.

Default Image Sites Under CC License

Great topic and question. So many people copy images from other blogs and photographers and have no idea that pictures are copyrighted as soon as they are taken. This usually doesn't matter as many blogs or other sites don't make enough money for the people to care (or know), but you will definitely want images under a Creative Commons (CC) License if you plan on being noticed. Here are some sites that have beautiful images in public domain.

Flickr - Many people aren't aware, but most photos of Flickr are under a CC License and are available to the public. Millions share their work and all you really have to do is pay close attention to what type of licenses each images falls under and/or contact the person sharing.

Freerange - Thousands of images are available at this site and all you have to do is register. High resolution photos for business or personal projects as well as AdSense revenue for those who contribute.

FreeDigitalPhotos - For those who don't want to browse gallery upon gallery of photos looking for the right one, the neatly categorized FreeDigitalPhotos is for you. Every image can be downloaded for free and larger and high resolution versions can be purchased for $5 and $10.

Stockvault - Connecting designers and photographers, this gallery features per 13,000 photos for both personal and noncommercial use.

Using your photos or ones that are public domain is one of the best tips for ensuring that your site is 100% legitimate, and something that new designers often overlook.

Hope this helps!

If it is presented in Google or all other social networking sites. It is probably non-copyright protected. But if it comes from a legitimate site that declares that their site is an copyright protected one, then it's a copyright protected images and all.

Technically, any work that’s not yours is copyrighted. But if you talk about copyright protection and all the laws/rules surrounding it, any work created before 1923 has no copyright protection. If you plan on using images for free, ExecutiveJ listed some of them.

Default Oh yes....

First....just assume that it is protected material,

Second....get images from a service that allows
you to copy, whether they expect you to pay or not.

Okay.

Actually, most of the images you see on social networking sites are copyright protected. It's just that the copyright owners have decided to not pursue everybody who clicks the button to share with their friends.

In fact, some of them believe that social sharing can give their images a wider audience and make them potentially more valuable than they would otherwise be.

However, just because they allow people to share the images on Facebook doesn't mean they'll be equally forgiving if you try to use the image on a T-shirt you're going to sell, or as an illustration on your business website, or in any other use where the image helps you make money. In that case, I'm sure many would expect -- and could legally demand -- a licensing fee.

As to images that appear in Google, there are plenty of copyright holders who have tried over the years to sue Google for copyright violation for displaying their images in image search. Google usually gets off, not because the images aren't copyrighted, but because Google is held to be not the "publisher" -- they're simply an information conduit.

However, that doesn't mean the images that appear in image search on Google aren't covered by copyright. It just means that Google isn't violating copyright by displaying them. Anyone who copies an image they find there and publishes it somewhere else (website, blog, software, tshirt, coffee mug, greeting card, etc.) is running a real risk.

Copyrighted images are typically going to found on specific sites that focus on the fact that the image is helping that site itself for whatever reason.

Random images on the web may be copyrighted, but you're far less likely to get in trouble for using them.
