Default Free Advertising and SEO Tips

OK, so I've seen all these Search Engine Optimization(SEO) lists that say to use link directories to improve Google Page Rank and SEO. Yet, no one seems to discuss tactics to getting the most out of those submissions. So, I thought I would share my lessons learned.

[url removed as per forum rules]
  1. Always make sure the link being given is SEO friendly. The page should link directly to your URL and encourage search engines to both index and follow all links on the page.
  2. Always read and comply with any listed submission guidelines. Directory owners recieve so many spammy and poor submissions that they rarely give a site a second chance. Take the time to play by their rules - after all they are giving you a backlink with the link text of your choice for free.
  3. When possible, take the opportunity to submit a link to an interior page (deep link).People will often trade links for homepages, but it is harder to get links to interior pages. Be careful; deep linking is often against a directory's guidelines and submitting a deep link can get your site permanently banned if the directory owner does not accept them. But, for those sites that do accept deep links, I recommend submitting pages that appear on your main navigation menu.
There are literally dozens of new directories launching on the net every day. For the most part, the directories will help with search engine optimization. Don't expect every directory to send wads of traffic to your sites; of the hundreds of directories I have submitted to, only 2 are giving my sites any traffic. (Both of those webmasters have given my sites premium placement in exchange for some proofreading I did for them - so in truth, none of the free listings have brought me any measureable traffic.)

Some of the more established directories charge for listings and are known to send traffic, but the focus of my efforts has been on FREE submissions.

However, I have literally watched my websites climb in Google and Yahoo due to these submissions.

Hope you find this helpful.

Good tips and glad to say I practice them all as best I can. The last two tips on your site are things I hadn't considered and I'm not entirely sure how important they will be as far as helping your site, but still interesting and something to think about. I understand the reasoning behind them, but not sure if what you would do in tweaking your submission will have much effect.

Red face Great Suggestions!

I liked your suggestions. I'm curious as to which two directories sent you the most traffic?
