Using free one are a given. Adding some paid ones that will benefit your business only makes sense if you have a budget to work with.

Try to use knowem.com it gave a lot more local directory, social networks and all other things you need to be social and locally known.

There are a few websites for which the paid version has proven to be useful to me - Yahoo Local, Kudzu, Thumbtack, Angieslist. Kudzu and Angieslist are quite expensive, but if you have a service-based business they might be a very good source of leads.

If you know how to enhance your free listing, you can and able to reach local customers. Just like in Google, Yahoo, and Bing just verified your listing in these three big directories your business profile can be found.

Great question. It depends like everyone else said on your target audience. Personally, yellowpages and chamber directories in my city and some of the cities nearby are important to me. The chamber directories cost money in that you have to be chamber members but the return you get is worth it if you're targeting local businesses.

I agree. Not every directory gets you in front of everyone - so you should consider using other advertising channels to get in front of more people.
