Default help needed tracking sales from leads

Can anyone offer any advice on creating a way to track sales from leads, much like how it is handled by google adwords?

I use Adwords, but also have other links I would like to track from some banner ads, email newsletters, and general directory listings.
I also have some offline stuff that I could use a special url for if I had a way to track from entry point to sale (such as place a cookie at entry and on conversion pages?)

Any thoughts? I have no experience with cookie creation but I thought that would be one way to go, or perhaps use an online service, if there is such a place that can provide this service.

I currently use Hitbox to monitor the site, but it is not a tool to track conversions, especially when the sales cycle is a few days to a few months.

thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

Welcome to the forum

Its never 100% accurate as even sometimes people clear cookies. The first question I would get a solid grasp of is

If you are looking at a few months as a relative factor then a cookie based solution set accordingly is going to be necessary. Consider the drawbacks of this and the reality that cookies don't always persist as long as needed when analyzing the data you do compile.

If you search google for [roi tracker] you will find some available. I always suggest trying before purchasing (at least a good demo) to determine which is going to suit your needs best. You should be able to find a suitable solution without having to custom program.

You could use tracking URLs, you know, the long funny URLs that add keywords to the end of them, this will help you see who is sending you the most traffic with any decent statistic program, that is just one idea. Have different ones for different campaigns.

Something you can try to not only track but increase conversions are special landing pages depending on the campaign with a different link to the order form. This way, you know how many each campaign gets in sales, and conversions should be higher because the message can be uniquely based on what site they came from. Just some different tactics I have seen.

ClickTracks is an excellent analytics program that will help you track all activity on your site including your AdWords campaign. There are versions that will work with your server's log files or versions that use JavaScript embedded in your pages to determine stats.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I agree that cookies are not 100% reliable, but other than an offer code it will be difficult to track sales on a product (courses / seminars, i work at a university) that has a little bit of a sales cycle.

David, Clicktracks sounds good, so does Urchin, which I believe does the same stuff, however I am locked into Hitbox pro and can not change now, or for the next year. It is a political thing. I also do not have access to log files.

Anyway, anyone have any thoughts on http://www.conversionruler.com/ ? They have a seemingly good link tracker solution that can help me track conversions from different sources and campaigns. They use a cookie system that seems to act like adwords does. I have not seen a lot on the web about them though.

Any other vendors that do something similar? Any thoughts about conversioruler?

thanks

As a part time web developer I have always written my own scripts for these kinds of things rather than using off the shelf solutions.

Depending on how your current system works and what your webhost supports there are many ways to do what you want. Cookies are one way of doing a longer term tracking of customers however with privacy concerns their functionality is continuously being reduced.

If you are wanting to track if a person visits your site from a link and doesnt buy but then subsiquently comes back and makes a purchase it will be difficult to do without cookies. If you want to track people who have bought then come back again to buy more then this should be a simple search on your database or setup user accounts to further simply the search - can always sell it to customers as saving them having to re-enter their personal details on return visits

I've used them for quite a while and I'm very happy with the service.

If you're using Google Analytics then you may want to brush up on their "campaigns" function.

You can create custom link URLs for each campaign to help you track the exact number of people clicking on a banner, Twitter link, Facebook redirect, etc.
