Exclamation Is Domain Age A Significant Factor In Website Rankings?

The debate is over...Well, at least in my mind it is. What debate am I referring to? The debate over whether or not the age of a domain plays a significant factor in website rankings. Some SEO experts say it does, while others say it doesn't. Count me on the side of those who say it does matter.

Frankly, I don't see why there's a debate about this at all. I mean it's hardly a secret that Google gives preferential treatment in the search engine results pages (SERP's) to long-established businesses because of the trust factor. Meaning, the longer a domain has been registered and active, the more trust...Continue reading Is Domain Age a Significant Factor in Website Rankings?

While I agree it most likely does matter, I think it is possible for a younger website to overthrow older websites that have gotten lazy and stops making updates and doesn't care about SEO as much anymore. But, to your point if you have 2 websites updating constantly and keeping up with SEO, the older one will probably win. Interesting research you've conducted.

There's no doubt that older domains recieve preferential treatment over newer domains -- if all other factors are equal. But as EricB mentioned, if a website owner of an older domain gets lazy, they could easily get overtaken by a newer website. For example, if a website owner quits building links because they have great rankings, and a newer domain starts an extensive link-building campaign, the newer domain could eventually knock the old one out. Obviously, there are a lot of factors involved... but the newer website could grown in popularity (and improve in other areas) enough to outweigh the advantge of the older domain...

So the older domain provides some value, but many other factors are considered as well...

if you loo up the ages of the websites ranking in the first page of search result page, you would 80% of websites have olde ages,at least 2 years or more.

I think domain age doesnt matter a lot nowadays.

Ex: If the old domain hasn't have anything to do to rank in the search engine while on the other hand the newly built website do a lot of efforts to rank with the help of Google's guildlines. Who do you think would be more fine in the search result???

I can give this as an opinion based answer.

Hope it means something...

It doesn't matter much. I started a computer business in 2006 with a newly registered domain and 6 months later I was ranked in Google 1st page, 4th position for the general phrase "custom pcs." Based off that evident proof, I don't think age matters too much.
