I started an adwords account. I decided I would do it so I can better compete with the local plumbing businesses here until my website SEO is up to par and im on the front page in search.
I'll let you know the results here when I get some data back.

Default For small start ups

For small start ups or small sites, using paid advertisements and adwords is very useful for bringing in the traffic at the start. Choose the right keywords that are popular yet unique to your site would be the most optimal.

I received a 100$ credit to use google adwords. I signed up and created my first add. Within the first month I had received 2 jobs equaling $800. So I didn't receive a huge demand, but the two jobs made it worth it, I will continue to use add-words!

You can pay for top position on target keywords.
You can geo target and only display your ads to your target location.
If you have a competitive advantage that you can exploit in a small amount of words and a website that can convert this traffic you have a formula for success.

Now you need to measure your ROI.. Your website needs to support a tracking infrastructure: You need to track every phone call and web form submission back to your adwords campaign.

$100 spend to generate $800 in sales... (13%) that's a little pricy but may work in your business. That's the key, does it work for you.

Once you have figured out what works for you then scale it up.

I never expect to break even on money and time spent on marketing. My business is pure local. I just started out with no customers, I do income taxes out of my house part time. My business is a referral business. I want repeat customers and referrals.

I have used adwords for many years, it has taken me some time to get my head around it and figure out what I am supposed to do. When I was taught SEO, my training included lots of Google Adwords, especially when looking for keywords to apply to a website

If used properly you will have great success, I believe the return should be 5 times more than what you spend

It all comes down to return on investment (ROI). You're spending $ per click and only a certain % of those clicks convert. If you're an ecommerce site, the trick is figuring out the math before you spend a fortune on ppc ads.
