I like to be positive but it may be good to let slackers know that in hard times only productive employees are needed.

Make employees feel that they are part of the goals that you are trying to achieve on the shop and/or the company by being transparent about how the work that they perform helps the company, how it reaches particular goals and outcomes.

Showing to your employees how passionate you are in your business. Be one of the employee, make them feel that you're a boos but at the same time a person who they can work on, ask for something that can make a better ideas on your business. A friendly treatment to your employee is one way of motivating your employees to work in harmonious way.

It is essential to interact with your employees every now and then. Stop by have a little chit chat and do lunch with them. This will surely build a good relationship with your employees, eventually making them motivated to work better.

Exactly. Totally Agreed.

Unless an employee thinks that he/she is important in a company he cant be motivated. The above techniques will not encourage only one employee but all other employees too.

A very good friend of mine, a self made multimillionaire, now employs over 1200 staff. He tells them all that when they waken each morning not to lie thinking about the day ahead but rather get up straight away and start believing "This is going to be my best day ever"

Let them "get on the gravy train". Do some after work activities. Strengthens the collective and makes the boss more "human"!

Appreciation is the one which many of us would like to hear from our higher authorities. Even an experienced person would be over whelmed, when they get good appreciation. So, employees can be appreciated by providing them some good cash reward or any small memento during a meeting or just a few words of appreciation before other employees would do wonders. Piterion, an international company providing PLM solutions and other IT, Engineering solutions always encourage their employees in a better way to motivate them.

Rewarding employees and treating them well is a sure shot way to motivate them. I've heard of this company called Piterion, a market leader in PLM wherein they have these fun activities at work to keep the employees motivated and help them manage their stress. My friend works there and went on a ski trip last year! You could try to motivate your employees by organizing fun acitvities and events at work on a monthly basis and provide some sort of a forum for grievance redressal to make sure that their problems are heard.
