Default Email Conversion Rates?

We are trying to expand our online marketing efforts. Everything I read says not to purchase an email list. Obtaining your own email list is the suggested way. I am curious to ask people that have made their own email list what their conversion rate is. It seems like email marketing has a very low conversion rate and it would take a really large list to see conversions. Any input would be welcomed. I am new to email marketing and only trying to find some information our before beginning.

Hello There,

I actually have used Email Marketing Campaigns frequently in the past with some very successful and some very un-successful. What are you selling?

We sell a large variety of packaging supply products covering multiple industries. Most of our sales are business-to-business.

I can't give you a conversion rate, it depends on many variables, but I've seen strong results with building your own list. For example start with your previous customers or those that have already signed up with your site. Previous customers are some of the best potential leads your business has. Also provide a way for others who have not purchased to subscribe to your mailing. Those who have visited your site and sign up are demonstrating a strong interest and qualifying themselves. Those emails you purchase from a list I would avoid. Really you are just sending spam as they haven't asked for it.

If you are looking to expand your reach beyond previous customers and those that sign up at your site, the best results I've seen are when you advertise within the newsletter of someone else. This requires you to carefully consider the audience that they are sending to. Make some sort of incentive/offer (consider free) to get the best response.

Email marketing can be very effective, spamming to a "list" isn't.

It depends on your niche. Probably email conversion failures came from where the mails end up in the recipients' account. Most unsolicited mails are stashed in SPAM folders -- where recipients don't bother to check that much.

From my experience when working within USA laws, you may be treading dangerous grounds on the CAN SPAM act.

Typically when working with any email marketer, they will do a test run on your email list, usually a small sample. If that test email run goes something over 10% opt-out (or maybe a lower % now), then they will turn your business away.

The best way from my experience, is to generate your own double-opt in email list, of people who WANT to receive your newsletter. Otherwise it's like junk mail in my opinion.

Hope that helps =)

I see about a 1-3% click through rate on the emails that I send. I can share the lists with you and my knowledge of the industry and Can Spam Compliance laws.

I have generated a fair amount of business, though it can be time consuming.

Thank all of you for the input. This helps me get started with a little more knowledge.

I've only just started getting very serious about email (I recently wrote up a monthly schedule of emails I'll be sending out) so I found this conversation really helpful!

Once I start sending emails I'll keep a close eye on the open rates and conversion rates.

Personally, I like email marketing the best. I think it is way more productive than any form of social media!
