Default Google's Free Smtp Service For Sending Mass Emails

I see in this forum that people are looking for ways to send mass emails. Just to let you know, recently I found that I could use google's smtp service to do that. It is free and quite fast.

I got java code to do that if anyone is interested.

No javascript needed, just make these changes in your e-mail client:

1. Under Outgoing mail, set the SMTP server to smtp.google.com.

2. Set the your username is [email protected] and make sure "Use username and password" is checked.

3. Also check off "TLS" under "Use secure connection."

Gmail automatically rewrites the "from" line of any e-mail you send via their SMTP gateway to your Gmail address, and it overrides any Reply-To settings you may have in your e-mail software in favor of the one in Gmail's web interface.

This is not a great solution for marketers trying to improve deliverability, and using it for marketing probably violates Gmail's terms of service.

Furthermore, if you are mailing to an established list, your recipients are probably looking for your e-mail to originate from your company's domain, and not from Gmail. That's a good way to wind up in the junk folder.

The best way to improve email deliverability is to partner with an email trust authority such as Habeas. We've done that at Infusion Software with our CRM and we've seen excellent results.

That's great information - thanks. I didn't know I could do this through Google and have been looking at special software and web services - the Google route could be ideal for my modest needs.

Keep in mind you are dealing with Google. They snoop every chance they get. Next week they may be selling your mailing list. Or sendout out their own ads to your list.

I don't trust them at all.
