Default Bounce Rate

A bounce is a single-page session on your site. In Analytics, a bounce is calculated specifically as a session that triggers only a single request to the Analytics server, such as when a user opens a single page on your site and then exits without triggering any other requests to the Analytics server during that session.

Bounce rate is single-page sessions divided by all sessions, or the percentage of all sessions on your site in which users viewed only a single page and triggered only a single request to the Analytics server.

These single-page sessions have a session duration of 0 seconds since there are no subsequent hits after the first one that would let Analytics calculate the length of the session.

Default It matters

Your bounce rate is important as Google now makes use of user experience metrics, such as time on page and bounce rate to compare the quality of your site to similar ones in your niche.

So if your metrics are better than is good, if they are worse it may cause you to be pushed down.

Google uses manual reviewers so it can compare bounce rates to what humans say and note and therefore learn how to use metrics to improve its results.

Default Videos etc

Making a page longer - ie more words will reduce the bounce rate adding pictures and videos, in particular, seem to add a few seconds also. That may make the difference if your page is up against others similar in all other respects except bounce rate.

Bounce rate is the percentage of single page visits (or web sessions). It is the number of visits in which a person leaves your website from the landing page without browsing any further. Google analytics calculates and reports the bounce rate of a web page and bounce rate of a website.
