Default Build up the traffic for a new local community website

Ive created a new community website called Ziptowns [see signature file for web site], that provides a space for individuals to offer, rate, and recommend various services in the local community. Viewers can roam from one place to the other by hopping through the ZIP codes in the 10 miles radius. The website also offers a community section to discuss topics ranging from local issues to world affairs.

The challenge, perhaps as experienced by many web application developers, is in getting the initial traffic. If you have any ideas or suggestions, Id love to hear from you!

Best regards,

--Mason

Welcome to the forum, Mason! Great idea for your site.

For marketing, I'd focus on advertising via AdWords using local search terms and zip code search terms. For example, "lawn care 77095" or "Northwest Houston Restaurants". Link the ads directly to pages on your site that cover the topic.

You'll probably be surprised by how cheaply you'll be able to advertise with this route. Search engine users are getting better at searching for local terms and you can get your site in front of them early on.

Robert,

thanks for the idea. All the while i only focused on the general keywords and ignore the local related keywords in the Adwords. I will have a try to see the result

Hi Mason,
Local reviews are extremely important these days, so your site could take off fast with the right marketing. There was a recent Nielsen report that showed "online reviews" were trusted more than *any other advertising method* either online or offline. The only thing more trusted was a recommendation from a friend or relative.

If I were you, I'd send out a press release with "10 tips" or "mistakes to avoid" to your local papers, radio stations, TV stations and put it online too. It's a timely news story and could easily get picked up by all the major media outlets in your area. Plus, all those media outlets have local businesses as their clients (advertisers)...so they're all going to want to make sure their business is reviewed positively.

Good luck!
