MaineCopywriter has the right idea (just look at his handle!)

Writing a top 10 or review is a great idea. Then try to get a link to it from a local paper by commenting on a relevant article if you can, or search for another way. trusted local backlinks (like schools and newspapers) seems to be helping a lot with local results.

Also, if there is anyway you can get a link from a .edu site (local school site maybe, resources section??) you will get a lot a of Google love.

I agree with Robert. Adwords using local terms would get trffic started pretty quick.

I would also suggest using Facebook's PPC for local terms. You might be surprised how many people there are from your area on Facebook.

I would have to say linking directly to your website will get you the most amount of people coming to the website, also as someone said adding local marketing will get you a lot of traffic, so getting your name out to the local papers will grow your business, also creating a few Facebook groups targeted to the local search will get you more people coming to the website.

Don't take the small stuff for granted. Get out and blog about local places and visit the local businesses you cover so you can talk up your website with people. Facebook ads and banners are good advertising tools as well .

My only good tip is make sure that your site is linked properly and structured the right way. Also when you start building external links, make sure that it is genuine and related to avoid get penalized. But most of all, get an interesting community to start with.

I like local reviews because it boost up reputation. Also, reviews can be of harm if the review is the opposite. Anyways, welcome to the forum!
