Default Could Twitter Replace Email Marketing?

Email marketing offers a channel to directly target subscribers, however the return in investment, particularly for smaller businesses is still fairly low in comparison to other media channels. The biggest email marketing value for many businesses, particularly in the B2B markets, is in relationship and brand building over a period of time, supporting the overall sales process Ė Now we have Twitter to do that, and its free. From restaurant bookings to product launches, Twitter has now become a de facto tool, not only for relationship building, but also sales.

However, it is not just the small companies that are cashing in to the potential of Twitter. According to June reports from from Dell Computers, they generated $3m in sales from Twitter (Internet Retailing Magazine)

Echo E-Business have developed social media marketing strategies for organisations globally, and advocate Twitter as an essential element of any Internet marketing strategy. Its important to remember, however, that itís not what tool you use, but also why, how and when to use it. With any strategy itís important to ensure that you are in the right place at the right time, and that your message if communicated effectively.

Echo E-Business recently posted a recent Customer Engagement workshop alert on Ecademy. Within one hour, a member of IBM Australia advocated the workshop in a Tweet to his network. An IBM Twitter follower subsequently contacted Echo E-Business. This is the power of Twitter - the ability to advocate others, and have them advocate you Ė And it costs nothing, just time and know-how!

Online strategies are now an absolute necessity, even for the smallest or most traditional of traders and for e-businesses looking for levels of engagement unmatched by traditional media. The problem is that most businesses are still struggling to get to grips with Twitter, and understand itís real value.

Twitter is no doubt a very useful mean for getting quality and targeted traffic to your site but e-mail marketing has its own advantages and it depends upon the type of business you are promoting and marketing on internet.

There is no doubt that Twitter is a great tool for B2C business and an generate a lot of sales potential, I don't think email is done for just yet. B2B business still requires the email route. Twitter is more for cultivating the relationship so the conditions for making a sale are in place.

I am agree with your comment. You are correct. At this time Twitter has become a very Social Networking Site that helps to advertise any B2B website very easily in all over the world.

I feel Email Marketing is quite risky when compared to the twitter. The only reason is mails are too formal to express and advertise and we also have a problem with spam.So i opt for twitter which can gain good network and lots of traffic to a site.

I think you are right. E-mail marketing has its own plus and also it is much more familiar. However there is no doubt on the potential of twitter. Itís a great tool but you should know how to use it to get the maximum benefit.

I think these two are still too different from each other. But you have an interesting point, and who knows, maybe in the future..

Twitter will never replace email marketing from my point of view, because with the help of Twitter we still can communicate, but email marketing is one way communication.

No, for a variety of reasons...not the least of which, Twitter only allows a maximum of 140 characters. As a result your communications are extremely limited. With e-mail, you really have no limitations.

I find that it is easy to point Twitter entries to my blog. Because if you have a blog, you might have trouble attracting followers. Search engines, and blogs are very crowded these days!! If you want to sell through Twitter you might want to add an opt-in mechanism so people won't escape you. Then you can send email regarding your product and website; this could work for you.

However, I still use forums for traffic despite my Twitter is in motion. FYI
