That definitely seems like a rational/logical point because I would think that Google is operating under the impression that not everyone will become an SEO master so therefore they would expect natural linking, which would inevitably include a few nofollow links.

However, let me ask this, although I should expect some nofollow and want the inclusion of some nofollow based on the aforementioned rationale, are there some inclusions that are better to have as nofollow over others in terms of articles, blog comments, forum comments, press releases, etc.?

Hi David,

Just wanted to add value to your great information on no follow topic.

NO Follow tags are useful:
Though NO follow tags might not transfer Link Juice to your Page, but we cannot forget that we will be surely benefited with respect to Crawling.
When that page will be crawled definitely on that page we have our link present too..so it will be crawled as well.
This feature of "No follow" helps a lot in SEO.
Thanks.

As far as I remember - nofollow wasn't originally so much to tell Google not to credit PR for the links - that was more of a side effect -- it was supposed to truly be to tell Google not to follow a link while it was going through your site, for example - if you had a link to a register or a login page, there was no reason for Google to crawl that page, so you'd add nofollow. Correct me if I'm wrong of course:P
i think you're getting the nofollow attribute confused with disallow function in the robots.txt file

I believe each and every link created for your keyword whether it's do-follow or no-follow, puts an impact on your ranking. But one should always try getting more do-follow links as they benefit more as compared to no-follow.

I totally buy into both being effective. I guess I'm concerned since I'm still very green to SEO about how can I look for sites, blogs, etc and know whether the links are do follow or not?

there are a number of add-ons to browsers you can use that will show you no-follow links. i use Chrome for browsing and the add on i use is SEOquake. it puts a red dotted line around all no-follow links

Even though Nofollow links don't give link juice as dofollow links do, but still back links high PR relevant sites are valuable. They help you Google rankings.
