I wouldn't argue your assessment. It's definitely one of the biggest letdowns in this past year. The real sad thing is I don't think any of the existing ones can be as complete as Yahoo Site Explorer.

Although I find SeoQuake tolerable. But still far from what I'm used to.

SEOMoz's Open Site Explorer is the best freely available link tool, register with them (free as well) and you'll get more data. The downside is that its not updated nearly as often as Majestic SEO which is updated constantly, but has pretty limited functionality in their free version and the paid version is pretty pricey.

Second that Mike. Without a doubt, open site explorer has been the most effective tool I have found now that yahoo's is out of the picture.

seospyglass is a good free option.
majestic is also a good option, you can view a small percentage of links free, the rest require a subscription.

yahoo site explorer is gone , i think it is not associated with bing.com. Well you can also use opensiteexplorer.org.

Bing has recently announced their Webmaster Tools has been upgraded with a link explorer. It takes a little bit of poking around to find it an figure out how it works, but it appears to have decent link data (at least, on my first glance at it).

I personally use backlinkwatch and opensiteexplorer to check the backlinks of my competitor.

It's definitely a good start thus far. It's very similar to Yahoo Site Explorer.

I like these tools, but don't they make the page load slower and drag on the performance of your own browser? I don't want it to be functioning all the time -0 can it be turned off at times?
