Default Starting A Self Serve Dog Wash

I'm looking for information on the pet industry target market and trends. It's frustrating because everyone wants you to pay for the material. Does anyone have a good resource for free target market information??

Does anyone have a comment on the self-serve dog wash idea??

Sounds like a good idea!

As a pet owner and person starting a small business, I guess my question would be what can you offer that I can't get by hosing my two dogs in the backyard for free? Just curious on you service plan.

Yes, specific marketing reports are usually paid for. Perhaps you could use other means for research. Maybe pet supply sales reports for specific areas could be something you could get your hands on for free, and be a fairly good way to gauge the market in that area, but would probably require some digging

Also, I’m curious of what a self service dog wash is exactly.

You should be able to determine if it is a business that will take off by running off a tousand flyers at Office Depot and them passing them out.

If you don't get any responses, then maybe it wasn't such a hot idea.

I've seen several articles on them. They were mostly about new startups, which looked like a good thing, but I haven't seen any "year later" results.

I think they would end up being like a car wash, you will need a lot of impulse goodies for the owners to purchase, in addition to the wash area. It might be a good spot for selling gourmet dog biscuits, along with dog specialty items.

A great service, I would think.

There is no good resource for the self-serve dog wash industry because it is so new. I started my wash over 2 years ago after doing as much research as I could. There is a lot to learn first hand. There are only a few franchises out there, and to me the all suck really bad. Poor layout and bad ideas. I'm still a few years away working out the kinks before I try and open another store and/or franchise. There are several things to know: first, you have to love pets because there is plenty of fur and messes to clean up. You will be working long hours, and it will take time for things to take off. The first 6 months we did like 400 washes. Now we are almost at 2000+ washes a year....and about half of all people coming in are new, and most are word of mouth referrals. The big thing is make sure you are nothing like any other local pet supply store...if you are you have no chance of survival. This is totally a niche market, so you have to target a very loyal pet market. If you want to check out our store go to www dot wipeyourpawz dot com
Hope this was helpful and good luck.

Welcome janetko!

Nice input pooba.

I really like the idea and would like to see one go up out near us. We live in the country, (lots of dirt), and would find it so much more convenient to wash our 3 very large dogs!
