Default Do SE's Crawl PDF's?

So, i don't know if this has been covered yet in the forum. If so then i missed it. I was wondering if SE's Crawl PDF's? If they do crawl them is their a way that we optimize them or make them easier to crawl?

Hi Wayne, all of the major search engines do crawl PDF's. Here is a good article that provides an overview of how to optimize a pdf.

Did You Know You Could Optimize Your PDF Files for Search?

Outside of that, I think it is important to also provide links within the pdf back to the website ... so if someone reaches the pdf via a search it is easy for them to also navigate to the rest of your site.

No questions are too disturbing

I believe James was referring to those who sell ebooks. They provide them as pdfs. If they are not secured, they may be spidered/included by the search engines. Then other people can find them and download them without paying. Thus if you have pdf ebooks that you are selling, you should make sure they are secured as search engines do crawl pdfs

Default Secure pages

I worked for a company that sold membership to their website and thought by naming the pages with random letters "wythdgfs" that nobody would find the information. They later found out people would google "index: wwwwebsitename.com" and find their "hidden" pages.

ya SE do crawl pdf. so you need to protect any files which is for private use. i think you should put in folder which is restricted from spider bots and put that url in your robots.txt file.

Search engines definitely crawl PDF's. I don't know if they follow PDF links back to websites, but your users definitely can!

One important thing to keep in mind: If the PDF doesn't have embedded text (ie, the PDF is just a large image), the bots won't be able to read the text. For example, if you create a large flyer in Photoshop as a PSD and print it to PDF, the text is going to be treated as an image. But, I use an older version of Photoshop (CS), and maybe newer versions will create PDF's will actual embedded text instead of a flat image.

And some people even look for the robots.txt file to find hidden pages
