Hello all,

What is the difference between branding and advertising? Aren't they the same thing?

A brand is about building a good reputation around your logo, etc. but I guess you might consider that a form of marketing.

Branding & Advertising has very thin line of difference,

Here we go,

Branding:
As said by viper_one adding further to it, It intends more towards growing the good will & reputation of your company through various activities or things such as your company's name on T-shirt, caps , organizing events for some noble cause which in turn spreads some good words about the company via people who participate.

Advertising:
Here its more used commercially, its more intended towards sale of particular service or product. Because only after good advertising, sales starts rolling in!
Hope this helps.

Branding and advertising are two main pillars of marketing; But they are very different.
Branding is meant for making reputation, getting trust, people can recognize your product with your company name.
Advertising is meant for pure marketing, to making your reach to people, offering different offers, products, services.

As the trend of buying products has been changed, before buying product/services people like to know about them, they compare for prices, features etc. They try to get reviews from other users about their experiences; It seems SEO is going to be future of marketing just because this sector has power to encompass the needs of user in this term.

Branding is a process, which is kind of promotion of a name of business / product, promoting to create an image. The process includes the naming, marketing, promoting.

Advertising focuses on a buzz / awareness about the brand, promoting the brand doing some funny things, which shows the quality, features and participates in indirect competition with another brand.

Default Branding versus Advertising

As I talk with clients, this seems to be an area that seems to confuse quite a bit of clients..

In short -

Branding (online) refers to how your organization or company's "entire web presence" is viewed or perceived... what thoughts are invoked in the mind of the consumer or prospect when they see your business name, organization, logo, etc.

Advertising (online) is aimed more at "exposing" your organization or company as well as it's benefits by means of various marketing channels. You advertise via email, social media, a web site, youtube, etc.

You can have tons of advertising and your "brand" may suffer due to the way it is perceived...

Case in point...

Anyone remember the days of "Kentucky FRIED Chicken"?

Those days are gone due to "branding"... The company did not want to be associated with the word FRIED as more consumers became "health conscious".

They augmented their branding.

Now it's KFC...

During the time they were known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, there "advertising" was still quite prominent.

The very subtle move from Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC was barely noticeable. Now no one refers to them as Kentucky FRIED Chicken any longer... it's KFC

Hope this helps...

This is a very difficult question with a very simple answer.

Branding, at its most basic level, is simply the promise of an experience.
Advertising makes the promise.

When I started my business, I had this very question in mind. We wanted to create a brand that had long term potential and then advertise that brand to drive in business.

Without our brand, the advertisements (i.e. flyers, cards, etc.) would be less memorable. My two cents

As far i know Branding means introducing your product to the buyers

and advertising displaying your product to the buyers...
