Default A business while in college, help!

Good afternoon everyone,

My good friend and I would like to run a small business while in college to fund college living and expenses. The multitude of products and services we would like to offer would be web hosting, web design, computer consulting and repair, custom built computers, and other misc computer services. We would like the bulk of our business to remain local (excluding web hosting and web design that can be done primarily long distance via the web).

My friend is a Microsoft Certified Professional, and I am a business administration major at Cal Poly SLO. With that being said, I have a few questions for everyone. What are some good marketing strategies to build a client base both locally and on the web? What are some good ways to drive a lot of traffic to our website?

Also, what are some great ways to make side money WHILE going to college? I could always go the route of a part time job as I am doing now, however the dilemma there is that I often times find part time jobs boring and without a challenge whatsoever. Thanks in advance!

Hi Tyler,

For web design, I have found talking to local businesses and your local contacts the best way to find customers.

Online, you can try pay per click (Overture, Google), networking, search engine optimization.

Default Marketing Locally

Hi Tyler!

Marketing locally you have many options. Some that come to mind:

Are you using the university newspaper? It goes to alumni too.

Do you have business cards that look professional. Check out the "free" business cards at vistaprint.com. Then leave them everywhere!

Visit local stores without a web presence and do a quick mock-up first page for a site for them.

Go to local coffee shops with your friend (change locations frequently) and be heard talking about your business.

Design your logo and order logo clothing from a place like CafePress.com (very reasonable)

Check out local business expos / shows you can attend.

Leave flyers / business cards at local businesses. And go back again...and again. I would leave about a week to ten days between visits.

The more people you contact, the more sales you'll make. Good Luck!

Michele

Hi Tyler ~

You have some great advice already handed to you with the previous posts, but just to add to them...

Leave flyers at every dorm room
Ask professors if they will let you post your flyers in their classrooms
Ask the book store if you can post your flyer there
Hit all the bulletin boards on campus
Find out if you are allowed to post flyers on cars in the parking lots
Go to local businesses to see if they will let you post your flyers

Hope this helps!

~Lisa

Well, the main flaw with the business you want to develop is the competition...you will have to be really good in those domains.

That's easy. I'm making money on internet, and I'm 16...the secret is preselling (affiliate business). Make a good site, put adsense and linkshare programs in it and you may be on your way to recieving a nice revenue.

tyler, why not pick one of the products you hope to offer that you think has the most demand and start with that for now. if there really is demand for your services, then they will be requested as your biz grows, also, you wont be bogged down with work right from the very start. good luck.
