Default Frozen Yogurt Shop Marketing Idea?

I opened a frozen yogurst shop on Jan.
it was still snowing but I managed to hit break even after a month.

now it's going well. I was excited to see the gross for summer but I noticed 3 yogurt shops opening soon within 3 mile radius
In my area, there was none, that's why I opened self-serve type yogurt shop.
I am seriosly wondering why those owners moving in at the same time

anyways, I have advertising on local entertainment type news paper ($100 per week)

I think I should spend $$$$$ before those guys open up so people get used to my shop. (it's true, once people get used to certain place, they stick to it, they get afraid of trying new things)

here is the list of things I want to do, please give me feedback.

-Money Mailer in couple regions (sales guy showed the proof that it worked well for other yogurt shop owner)
-business card sized buy 1 get 1 free flyer on cars (not windshiled, driver window)
-passing out the same flyer at the university
-putting post card sized flyer at local coffee shops
-putting posters in university and around town
-giving out free samples to local businesses, kids soccer games
-build fan base on facebook and build my own texting list
I want to reach to high school kids but can't find a way.

I am going to do some photoshoot with model looking girl (kind of fashion magazine style with yogurt in it) to come up with good pictures for all printing ads

Another question. do you think having attractive female workers can increase my business? I am 26 years old guy. I've been working everyday to save money since I opened. now I have part time girl who comes few hours a week. I think I need more good looking girls to build good image

My price is .39 an ounce. it's a lot cheaper than non-self serve place.
I don't think I am going to lower the price just because I am seeing the competitions.

hi there,

In my opinion if other owner's are moving in your area there is high possibility that there is money to be made there. This should be an encouragement for you. At the same time you might be a bit afraid when you know that they are competitors.

The advantage that you have is that you have the first move advantage. You should work to keep this advantage. As you rightly said it is important that you work on the loyalty of your clients.

1. Try to work on a loyalty program

It does not need to be too expensive but something that will encourage people to come back.

2. Differentiation

Try to offer something that others don't have. The key here is innovation.

3. Girl staff

In my opinion it all depend on the target market. If your client base is males then chances are you can have increased sales. Has sales increased since you have the part-time girl?

as far as girl staff goes. I am not sure. there is no way to figure out how much it increased my revenue.
my main target is not guys. usually women comes with their guys or as a group. I say 60% are women.
the shop is very cute & modern environment (kind of feminine) plus it's a yogurt shop. so I think having an attractive & sweet girls can send out good image.
I am sure women will prefer being served by those type of person
i
t's true that if you go to nice restaurant, the staff looks more professional and better looking.

I don't think there can be big differences in yogurt quality (few suppliers out there, unless you do some homemade stuff) so it's hard to differentiate unless you are a big corporation who can order custom made yogurt (big quantity)
I am trying to differentiate in the atmosphere. it's far from baskin robbins or local ice cream parlor. like I said above, it has very cute & modern environment where you want to just hangout with your friends at night

I really like your idea of having cute girls as your employees for your yogurt shop, the atmosphere is really important to gain the loyalty of your customers. Now going on to advertising, there are lots of options you just know what to choose or just look for cheaper yet effective alternatives.

Always remember that you must have something unique which none of your competitors may be able to have in order to survive in such a fierce competition and to get succeeded.

Yeah there are some cheap advertising alternatives that exist. Why not make use of social media sites such as Facebook in order to build a group for your shop. You can provide them with occasional deals. This is only one idea.

yes I am trying to be unique in the atmosphere.
cute employee is part of it. don't take me wrong though. I am not tying to hire slutty looking bar type girls. I just want to hire more than average attractive female who looks very sweet to everyone.

I heard more than 100 times that my place looks cool.
some people told me it has 60's modern theme ( don't even know what that is since I was born in 80s)
it's definitely far away from typical ice cream parlor.
I also play cool music (louge bar type music)
so interior + employee + music is the key I believe (having good yogurt is just the average)

Remember, P.F Chang is no better than average chinese restaurant. (as far as food taste)
No guy would take a girl out to 'chinese restaurant' for a special date.
If her bf took her to pf chang, she would say 'oh he took me to pf chang' instead of saying 'he took me to chinese restaurant'
people will go to this place and pay extra $$ not because of better food but because of better employees, interiors and image.

I've done business with a popular water ice chain and I'd say the two major things they say they benefit from was a facbook page and our textimize service. If you update your flavors almost daily like they do they are perfect mediums for getting the word out and seding those instand coupons on those rainy summer days.

If your willing to do a buy one get one free offer maybe you should try a punch card offer instead, the benefit is of course that the customer must come in multiple times to earn the free yogurt.

I am talking about a little business card sized handout you give to customers when they purchase yogurt where you use a hole punch to mark how many yogurts they have ordered and after a certain number they receive a free one. I hope that makes it sound clearer, I see it in my head but don't know if I'm explaining it right.

Anyway I think it achieves what you're trying to do, by giving customers a reason to return after that first and even second time. A buy one get one free offer might be better initially, but I would think a punch-card would have a greater long term effect.

I agree that it is great that others are moving in...there is money to be made. And yes, hiring hot girls often helps.

Here's an idea; Go to your local Kinkos or copy center and find out how much it would cost to create a multi -sided flyer or newsletter. Then scope out 5 - 10 other businesses in the area that offer a complimentary product or service as you (ie: sandwiches, pizza, a massage spa, hair salon etc.) Tell each of these businesses that you are starting an Ad campaign with flyers for the local community and you are only working with a select few of business...ask whether they would like to be selected. You will do all the leg work, create the flyer, create the advertising for them, distribute the flyers to the community etc. All they have to do is pay there share. This way you can work the cost of all your leg work into the cost the other businesses pay so you end up with zero cost (of course it will take you time and energy, but $0).

You will not only have a low cost advertising campaign, but you are bringing the community together and offering value to your other business colleagues...you'll be sure to get tons of WOM marketing from them.

Spencer
